An ISP vs. Hosting Provider

An ISP vs. Hosting Provider

It recently came up in a discussion as to what is the difference between a hosting provider and an ISP (Internet Service Provider).  In answer to that question, here are the basic differences:

  1. An ISP provides connectivity to the Internet.  This may be via dialup, DSL, T1, etc.  Some ISPs do provide hosting services as well as part of their packages.
  2. A hosting provider on the other hand offers a variety of services, from web and email hosting to domain name management services.

If you are a business looking for an Internet Presence, I recommend the use of a hosting provider so that you can get the most reliable services and good support.  In addition, if for any reason you need to change ISPs there is no reason to change your hosting provider as well which would typically make the transition more difficult and time consuming.

So, what advantages do you see of using a hosting provider vs. your ISP?  Feel free to comment below.
