According to the state of Missouri, all businesses, non-profits, schools, and public agencies in the state are required to properly dispose of all unwanted electronics. Such items are classified as hazardous waste under Missouri law, so they cannot be disposed of in the trash.

Why are these items considered hazardous

  1. Computer monitors and older TV picture tubes contain an average of four pounds of lead and require special handling at the end of their lives.
  2. Many electronics can also contain any combination of hazardous materials, including chromium, cadmium, mercury, beryllium, nickel, zinc, and brominated flame retardants

When electronics are not disposed of or recycled properly, the toxic materials present in these items can problems in the environment, and the people around them.

What can you do to help

There are several things that you or your business can do to help.

  1. Donate your most up-to-date and working electronics to various charitable organizations.
